Your fasting day, step by step

Sargi

Eat a proper meal before sunrise. Don't skip it.

During the day

Check sugar every few hours. Rest and stay out of the sun.

Moonrise

Water first, then a few almonds or a small fruit.

Dinner

Dal, sabzi, 1–2 rotis, salad and curd. Walk for 10 minutes after.

A diabetes-friendly sargi

  • 1–2 besan or paneer rotis, little ghee
  • A bowl of curd
  • A handful of almonds and walnuts
  • An apple, guava or pear
  • 2–3 glasses of water
  • Pheni with sugar, mathri, mithai
  • Sweet lassi or packaged juice
  • Too much tea or coffee

Break the fast right away if

< 70mg/dL sugar
> 300mg/dL sugar
Shaky, sweaty, dizzyor confused

For low sugar, take 3 teaspoons of glucose in water or half a glass of juice, then check again after 15 minutes. If you don't feel better, call your doctor. Breaking the fast for your health is completely okay.

Quick questions

Can a diabetic keep the Karwa Chauth fast?

Many women with well controlled type 2 diabetes keep it safely with planning. If you have type 1 diabetes, take insulin, often get low sugar, are pregnant, or have kidney or heart problems, talk to your doctor first.

Can I drink water during the fast?

A fast without water raises the risk of dehydration and sugar going too high or too low. Many families accept a fast with water or buttermilk for health reasons. Talk to your doctor and your elders.

Should I take my medicines on the fasting day?

Don't stop or change any medicine on your own. Some tablets and insulin need a different dose or timing on a fasting day, so ask your doctor a week before.

Are sugar-free sweets okay after the fast?

They still have flour, khoya, ghee and calories, and some raise sugar. Have one small piece after your meal, not on an empty stomach.
