Thyroid Dietitian & Nutritionist in Noida
Thyroid problems, especially hypothyroidism, are very common in India, and many people notice weight gain, tiredness and hair fall even while taking their medicine. Food does not replace thyroid treatment, but the right meals and routine make a real difference to weight, energy and related problems like high cholesterol. Dietitian Arti Kalra prepares customized thyroid diet plans based on home food, at her clinic in Sector 77, Noida, and online.

Thyroid problems and your weight
The thyroid gland controls how fast the body uses energy. In hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) metabolism slows down, so people often gain weight, feel tired and cold, and have constipation, dry skin or hair fall. The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition. In hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) the opposite happens, and weight loss and muscle loss are common.
Thyroid problems often come together with PCOD, high cholesterol and insulin resistance, so a good diet plan looks at the whole picture and not only the TSH report. Diagnosis and medicine are decided by your doctor. A diet plan works alongside that treatment.
How diet helps in thyroid
- Steady weight loss: a calorie-balanced plan with enough protein at every meal, so you lose fat without losing energy or muscle.
- Right foods for the thyroid: iodised salt in normal amounts, and whole foods that give selenium and zinc, such as dals, nuts, seeds, eggs and curd. Extra iodine or supplements are taken only if your doctor advises them.
- Medicine and meal timing: the thyroid tablet is usually taken on an empty stomach as your doctor advises, and the plan keeps a gap before tea, coffee, and calcium or iron supplements so the medicine works well.
- Fibre and fluids: vegetables, fruits, whole grains and water to help with constipation and fullness.
- Cholesterol and sugar control: fewer refined foods and fried snacks, because thyroid problems often raise cholesterol.

How the diet planning process works
- Evaluate your health status: Your weight, height, age, medical history and current reports are reviewed first.
- Dietary habit analysis and counselling: We discuss your daily routine, food preferences, working hours and eating pattern.
- Customized meal plan: You get a plan built around home-made food that fits your routine and your family kitchen.
- Guidance on portion control: You learn how much to eat, not only what to eat, so the habit stays after the program.
- Fortnightly follow up and review: Your progress is reviewed regularly and the plan is adjusted to keep you moving.
- Ongoing support: You can reach out with questions, and you are guided on how to maintain the result.
Frequently asked questions
Can thyroid be cured with diet?
No. Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's are managed with medicine advised by your doctor. A suitable diet helps you control weight, energy, cholesterol and other symptoms, and it works together with your treatment.
Should I stop eating cabbage, cauliflower and soya?
Most people do not need to stop them. Cooked cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and normal amounts of soya are fine for most people with thyroid problems. Very large amounts of raw vegetables or soya supplements are a different matter, and your plan takes care of portions.
Can I lose weight with hypothyroidism?
Yes. Once your thyroid levels are controlled with medicine, a balanced calorie-controlled diet with enough protein, regular activity and good sleep helps you lose weight steadily. It may be a little slower than for others, so the plan focuses on steady progress.
Do I need to stop gluten or milk for thyroid?
Not by default. Gluten needs to be removed if you have been diagnosed with celiac disease, and milk can be adjusted if it upsets your stomach. Your plan is made after looking at your reports and symptoms instead of cutting out food groups without a reason.
When should I take my thyroid tablet and breakfast?
Follow your doctor's advice on timing. Usually the tablet is taken on an empty stomach with water, with a gap before breakfast, tea or coffee, and a longer gap before calcium or iron supplements. Your meal plan is arranged around this.
Is online consultation available for thyroid?
Yes. You can consult online by phone and WhatsApp if you cannot visit the Noida clinic. See online diet consultation.
